Itinerary

Morning: Departure from Arusha to Kilimanjaro National Park

Your adventure begins with a 6:00 AM pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. Enjoy a scenic 2-hour drive through rural Tanzania, passing banana groves, coffee plantations, and bustling Chagga villages along the foothills of Kilimanjaro.

Upon arrival at Marangu Gate (1,870 meters), your Udzungwa Adventures guide will brief you on the hike and assist with registration. After completing the park formalities, it’s time to lace up your boots and step into the rainforest.

Mid-Morning: Rainforest Trekking on the Marangu Route

Your hike begins on a gentle, well-maintained trail that winds through Kilimanjaro’s dense montane forest. The air is cool and crisp, and the forest hums with life. Along the way, your guide will point out:

  • Troops of colobus monkeys leaping between the treetops
  • Blue monkeys, bush squirrels, and other shy forest creatures
  • Bird species such as Hartlaub’s turaco, olive sunbirds, and silvery-cheeked hornbills
  • Towering trees draped in moss, giant ferns, and colorful wildflowers

This peaceful section of the mountain is alive with sound, color, and movement—a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

Midday: Mandara Hut and Maundi Crater Exploration

After around 3–4 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 meters), the first overnight stop for multi-day trekkers heading to the summit. This is your resting point for the day.

Here, you’ll:

  • Enjoy a hearty picnic lunch in the serene mountain setting
  • Take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater, where—on a clear day—you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Kilimanjaro summit and the Maasai steppe
  • Chat with your guide and learn about the mountain’s volcanic origins, glacial cap, and cultural significance to local communities

Early Afternoon: Descent through the Rainforest

After your rest, begin your 2–3-hour descent back to Marangu Gate, following the same forest trail. With luck, you’ll spot more wildlife on the return and enjoy different light and perspectives on the landscape.

Your guide will answer questions, share mountain stories, and make the descent as engaging as the climb.

Late Afternoon: Return to Arusha

Once back at the gate, you’ll receive a Certificate of Participation from Udzungwa Adventures—proof that you’ve hiked one of the world’s most iconic natural landmarks.

You’ll then drive back to Arusha, arriving at your hotel around 6:00 PM, with a camera full of memories and a heart full of Kilimanjaro’s magic.
